 American Born Chinese

Unit Overview

In this unit, I read the novel called American Born Chinese. Throughout the unit, I learned the idea of the stereotypes and how they were described in the story, and how they are arranged in everyday life. I had to do a vocabulary assignment and lots of exercises in my Reader's notebook for each chapter. I the end of the book I had took the test and make my own comic book as a final project.

Enduring Understanding

  • How can you stay true to yourself in the face of judgment from your peers?

    • The way to stay true to myself when facing the judgement from my friends is trying to ignore some issues that are not important and do some that will make me happy.

  • Why do stereotypes exist? Are they ever accurate? Can a stereotype ever be positive?

    • It exists because we all have different ideas. They are not 100% accurate. Some people may be different from the group. For example, people always have the stereotype that Thai people always late. But not every Thai person that are like that. No, there are both positive and negative stereotypes.

  • How do stereotypes affect all of us?

    • Stereotypes affect all of us in many ways. Maybe like me if other people that didn't know me much they might think that I will be a person that always late as the stereotypes of Thai people, but if you know me better I always get on time.

Strengths

Key Ideas and Details: Recall important information and make inferences about the text. I think I my strength is remembering what happened in the story and which part of the story does the event happen.

Areas for Improvement

Writing: Plans, produces, and publishes a developed fictional narrative that follows a logical plot structure.I think I should improve my plan because in my comic book the picture is not very nice, so I need to have a better plan.
